Leadership
SEGA leadership has directly lead or participated in over 30 energy programs, produced hundreds of professional publications, and educated thousands of engineers who are currently working in the power industry. They are proven leaders in smart grid and energy research and development, and education and training. Both Dr. Arif Islam and Dr. Alex Domijan serve as the leaders of SEGA.
Dr. Alex Domijan is the Co-President of SEGA, and received his B.S. from the University of Miami, M.Engr. from RPI, and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. He has also served as a tenured professor of electrical engineering at the University of Florida, University of South Florida, and the James Clerk Maxwell Professor at the University at Buffalo where he serves as Director and founder of the Power Center for Utility Explorations (PCUE). He is one of the originators of flexible, reliable, intelligent, electric energy delivery systems, which are more commonly know as smart grids. His significant efforts have included Demand Response Opportunity Pilots (awarded Peak Load Management Award), Sustainable Electric Energy Delivery Systems (energy storage effort), Distributed Energy Programs in wind and solar, Distributed Premium Power Park, Smart Grid installations, Time Monitoring for Power Quality, Peak Load Shaving Technology with Renewable Resources, Demand Side Management Pilots, Advanced Commercial Energy technology for price response load management; and a Weather and Reliability effort monitoring 3 million utility customers.
Dr. Arif Islam is the Co-President of SEGA, and received his B.Tech. degree in Electronics Engineering from A.M.U., India, and M.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from University of Florida, Gainesville. Dr. Islam received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida. He joined Siemens in 1994 and worked in the industry for more than a decade executing many multi-million dollars projects. He is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University at Buffalo and the Deputy Director of the Power Center for Utility Explorations. His fields of expertise include, but not limited to power reliability, smart grid, predictive self healing networks and diagnostic center design (co-developer with NextEra of DOE funded +$600M Smart Grid and Gateway to Power (G2P) Projects), power electronics, motors and drives systems, advance metering infrastructure, renewable energy and sustainable power systems, distributed power systems, micro-grids, on-line efficiency control, understanding natural and man-made hazards, strategic load pockets, study of reliability & predictability of high penetration renewable resources power plants.
Dr. Damola Omole is the Director of Technology Strategy at SEGA and earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Florida State University, Tallahassee, where he researched the use of solar and fuel cells in distributed energy generation. Dr. Omole received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and his research interests include the use of renewable energy sources in an intelligent power grid. His fields of expertise include power conversion, voltage control, smart grid stability and reliability, and optimization of smart grid assets.
Jeremy L Susac, Esq., works with non-profits including Citizens for Clean Energy where he serves as Director of Smart Grid and Innovation, and is designated as an ‘energy expert’ with the Florida media. Immediately prior, Mr. Susac served in the public sector in leadership positions at the Florida Energy & Climate Commission, Florida’s Energy at the Department of Environmental Protection, and Chief Advisor to a Commissioner at the Public Service Commission. In that capacity, he provided the Commissioner with legal and public policy guidance on all matters that come before the Commission. At the national level, Mr. Susac also served on the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioner’s Electric, Nuclear, and Consumer Affairs staff subcommittees. As a technical advisor to these committees, he worked with regulators from across the nation on issues related to energy, alternative fuels, and conservation initiatives. Immediately prior, Susac served as a Senior Attorney in the Economic Regulation in Competitive Markets & Enforcement Division of the Florida PSC. Before that, Susac engaged in private law practice in New York City, and served as a summer clerk for a New York Supreme Court Judge.
